How To Make Your Car Smell Great, Toxin-Free

I have to admit that when transitioning to a completely toxin-free lifestyle, my beloved car scents were the hardest to give up. There’s just something about getting into your car when it smells like a batch of freshly baked snickerdoodles that’s hard to beat.

I refused to think about the ingredients in those little gel pods for the longest time. Probably because it doesn’t take a genius to know that they can’t possibly be natural.

After a little research, I, of course, discovered that your average little gel pod, spray, or pretty tree-shaped, dangly freshener has over 6 highly toxic ingredients in them that you’re breathing right into your lungs.

One of these is dichlorobenzene, a known carcinogenic and pesticide and a chemical that alters your sense of smell.

The good news is that there are a ton of natural options that smell even better and don’t turn your car into a toxic hot box.

Essential Oil Diffusers

I recently bought an essential oil diffuser that fits perfectly into the drink holder in my car. It’s SO easy- just put a little water in the top, add your favorite oils, plug into your outlet and ta-da! Fresh smelling car plus all the aromatherapy benefits.

This is my favorite blend for the car around this time of year. It smells just like a cinnamon dolce latte, uplifts your mood, and cleanses the air in your car.

My Favorite Fall Car Blend:
Ingredients:

2 drops Wild Orange Essential Oil

1 drop Cinnamon Essential Oil

1 drop Clove Essential Oil

5 drops Vanilla Essential Oil

DIY Homemade Felt Fresheners

Wool Felt

Pen

Scissors

Needle and Thread

Essential Oils of Choice (I’m currently using a Lemongrass and Orange blend)

Cord or Ribbon

Method:

Draw your design on paper and cut it out.

Trace onto felt and cut out. Repeat.

Neatly stitch the two pieces of felt together and secure. You can tuck the knot in with the needle so it’s not visible.

Select your essential oils and generously drop along the felt piece.

Using the scissors, punch a small hole in the corner of your felt freshener.

Loop through some elastic cord, yarn, or ribbon and tie a tight knot at the top.

Hang up in your car!

You can also decorate these with sequins, glitter, paint, pens, etc.! It makes for a great craft day or homeschooling project!

DIY Air Freshener Spray

10 drops essential oil

1/4 cup witch hazel

1 cup filtered water

Spray bottle

Method:

Take your spray bottle and fill it with your witch hazel and water.

Add essential oils of choice (when it doubt lavender is always a great option).

Secure spray nozzle and shake gently a few times to mix ingredients.
